Learn the basics of Dreamlight Valley — from controls to your first quests. Perfect for new players starting their journey
You’ll find and meet plenty of Characters on your journey to restore the Valley, but you’ll meet some earlier than others! Here are some notable early Villagers you may want to befriend:
Merlin is a wise wizard who has been around since the Middle Ages. He will be the first Character that you meet and although he’s a bit eccentric, you can rely on him to let you know where to begin restoring the Valley.
You can progress your Friendship Level with each Villager by completing their quests, having Daily Discussions, and giving them gifts.
Just like any great friendship, it'll take some time to foster your relationships, so be sure to chat and give gifts to your Villagers every day if you can! Each Villager has three Favorite Gifts that change daily and giving them is one of the fastest ways to increase Friendship. If you don't have their requested items, flowers and gems make great backup gifts.
TIP
Prepare multiple gifts for different Characters by looking at their profiles. This way, when you are out and about and run into one of them, you'll have it ready to go!
Leveling up your Friendship with Villagers will unlock Character-specific quests and awards, including unique clothing and furniture items.
Once you reach Level 2, you'll also be able to assign Characters a role, allowing them to help you gather resources when you choose to Hang Out with them! Doing this will also help boost your Friendship Level, regardless of what Activity you do or role the Villager has. Changing a Villager's role is possible, but takes extra resources, so try to maintain a balanced mix when you assign them!
Although your home starts off small, you can upgrade it as you wish!
You'll first have to complete Scrooge McDuck's "Dreamlight Valley Economy 101" quest, accessible once you reach Friendship Level 2 with Scrooge, after which a construction sign can be found next to your House. Interacting with it and paying Scrooge McDuck's fee will unlock an elevator pad inside your home, allowing you to change room sizes, add more rooms and floors to decorate, as well as expand your shared storage!
TIP
Entering your House when you're low on Energy will replenish it!
As you continue playing, you'll find that you'll end up with a lot of items in your Inventory.
INVENTORY
Your Inventory is everything you can carry on your Avatar as you go about your day and pick up items. You'll start off with 21 slots, but you can expand it one row at a time in exchange for Star Coins directly in your Inventory.
However, getting to the maximum of 42 Inventory slots can be costly! So, if you're starting out, consider looking into other storage options below.
SHARED STORAGE
Shared storage is accessible across all Vintage Chests. You'll have one already available in your House and you can purchase more from Scrooge's Store. No matter where these are placed in your Valley, you'll be able to access the same items!
Upgrading your House will also upgrade your shared storage capacity.
TIP
Placing a shared storage in every Biome next to Goofy's Stall makes for convenient access to your resources!
INDIVIDUAL STORAGE
Individual storage applies to all other storage items in the Valley, from crafted chests to purchased wardrobes. Their capacity will be determined by the furniture item, with larger pieces holding more than smaller ones.
This storage method is useful for items that you want to keep but may not need all of the time, such as quest items!
Early on your journey, Merlin will show you the Dream Castle, which has been overtaken by some pesky Night Thorns. Once cleared, you'll be able to enter the Castle and discover plenty of adventures awaiting you.
Realms are areas accessible through the Dream Castle doors, each based on different Disney and Pixar films, and filled with new quests and Characters. You can unlock whichever Realm most interests you; however, you may find some slightly more useful than others in your early days:
RATATOUILLE REALM
Here you'll meet Remy, who will show you how to cook some delicious dishes! Once he's invited to the Valley, you'll have a restaurant where you can cook and eat whenever you run out of Energy.
Going back to this Realm is useful too if you want to cook using free Ingredients!
TIP
Eating cooked meals when your Energy bar is already full will give you more Energy, allowing you to run or glide and move through your Valley faster.
WALL·E REALM
Here you'll meet WALL·E, who will ask you to fix a garden in the Meadow after he's been invited to your Valley. Once it's fixed, he'll tend to it himself and let you harvest its crops!
As you explore your Valley, you may notice that some areas have been blocked off by overgrown Night Thorns, just like the Dream Castle. These locked areas are called Biomes, different regions that make up Dreamlight Valley, each filled with different resources and critters. You can unlock them as you wish just like Realms, but some might be more handy than others.
DAZZLE BEACH BIOME
Not only is Dazzle Beach one of the easier Biomes to get in terms of Dreamlight, it also has plenty of resources and Ingredients! Some of them are even Villager favorites, like seafood for Goofy or tomatoes for Remy.
TIP
Most crops grow faster when planted in the Biome where their seeds are sold, maturing about 10% faster! When planting, you'll see a small green arrow next to the seed icon indicating its growth bonus.
There are lots of different resources to keep track of in the Valley and they're each used for something different. Here's an easy guide to remember what's what!
STAR COINS
The Valley's main coin currency. You can use Star Coins to buy clothing, furniture, buildings, and building upgrades.
HOW TO GAIN: Sell items at Goofy's Stall, complete quests, clear obstacles, or open reward chests.
TIP
Pumpkins are the most profitable crop, so consider planting a pumpkin patch if you're in need of some Star Coins! You can get seeds from Goofy's Stall in the Forgotten Lands.
DREAMLIGHT
The Valley's main magic currency. You can use Dreamlight to unlock new Realms and Biomes. Some crafting recipes also use Dreamlight as an Ingredient.
HOW TO GAIN: Complete objectives from Dreamlight Duties and tasks.
DAISY COINS
The Valley's Touch of Magic currency. You can use Daisy Coins to buy Touch of Magic base clothing and furniture, which you can then design and customize.
HOW TO GAIN: Complete Daisy's daily Design Challenges in the Boutique.
MOONSTONES
Disney Dreamlight Valley's premium currency. You can use Moonstones to purchase special items in the Premium Shop.
HOW TO GAIN: Purchase Moonstone packs, open the daily Moonstone Chest, participate in and vote on DreamSnaps, or exchange leftover event tokens.
DreamSnaps are a recurring in-game photo challenge, where players compete and decorate their Valleys according to that week's theme.
To unlock DreamSnaps, you must first welcome Vanellope to your Valley by completing the "Faith, Trust, and Pixel Dust" quest. This quest should begin as soon as you finish Scrooge McDuck's Level 5 Friendship Quest, "The Haunting of Dreamlight Valley".
You can participate by submitting your own DreamSnaps or by voting for your favorites!
Voting can earn you up to 50 Moonstones per week and the prize pot for submitting one is even bigger. Depending on the final ranking of your DreamSnap, you can earn up to 12,000 Moonstones for first place!
In addition to Moonstones, these challenges can also earn you Pixel Dust and a Reward Chest, which will reward you with various items according to your Pixel Dust Level.
TIP
Even if you're just starting out and don't have much decor or clothing, submitting a DreamSnap will still reward you with a minimum of 300 Moonstones! So don't be afraid to show off your Valley every week.
Have Daily Discussions with your Villagers.
This is an easy way to help boost your Friendship Levels.
Bring gifts to your Villagers.
Villagers' favorite gifts reset daily, so do your best to seek out and gift all three!
Check Scrooge's Store!
Scrooge's stock changes every day, so you'll want to take a look if you don't want to miss anything.
Collect your Reward Chests!
Blue Chests, which contain 50 Moonstones, will only show up one at a time and once a day in random places around the Valley, so be sure to be on the lookout. No worries if you don't collect them though, as up to 3 Blue Chests can accumulate in your Valley before new ones stop spawning.
Clear any Night Thorns!
Those pesky Night Thorns always seem to pop up, so staying on top of them each day helps keep your Valley neat and tidy.
Harvest crops from WALL·E's Garden!
The garden is unlocked during WALL·E's Village Project: The Garden quest, available once you reach Friendship Level 2.
Collect fish from Moana's boat!
The boat is unlocked during Moana's "Fixing the Boat" quest, available once you reach Friendship Level 2.
Complete your Star Path Duties!
Earn tokens and progress through the Star Path regularly to unlock limited-time exclusive rewards before the Star Path ends.
Check the Premium Shop!
The Premium Shop rotates every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. UTC / 9:00 a.m. EDT / 2:00 p.m. CET (3:00 p.m. CEST), so you'll want to browse every week to make sure you don't miss anything.
Submit your weekly DreamSnaps challenge!
